TATT

Tired all the time.

So it turns out that my prolonged disturbed sleep pattern may be the possible cause of this condition. It is a huge relief to know there are no other serious medical conditions, such as diabetes (because I also feel thirsty all the time, thanks to breastfeeding).

I have not slept through the night since 28 March 2010, the night before The Little Girl was born. If you count the broken sleep to include pregnancy days, then I can tell you it is since August 2009.

No wonder I look forward to the day Bean is fully-weaned and possibly, in sha Allah, I can regain proper sleep cycle.

TATT it is for now. Oh, bottles of water at my bedside, but of course.

Good night!

P/S: Please ask for a blood test to screen for diabetes, coeliac disease, anaemia, under-active thyroid if you feel TATT. It can save you, or improve quality of your life!

Gratitude: Pre-pregnancy Body

Today I am thankful for the return of my pre-pregnancy body.

I was hovering at 52 kg for the last few months and felt like another 4 kg off would be nice (I wanted to feel like I can perform my tashahud seating comfortably, feel more energised and lean, lose the baby flab, lose the sluggish feeling, have glowing hair and skin, a whole lot of other reasons).

Obviously, something had to be done and I made the pact with a group of awesome ladies to eat healthily.

Sugar was the first to be sent off the list. No more Milo and Horlicks for now. Coffee and tea for me are much better off sans sugar anyways. 2L of water is now 4L of water daily. Does wonders for milk supply too.

Since sugar is off the list, baking cookies and loaves with The Little Girl had to be adopted as well to something less sugary.

Since rice has high carbohydrate content, we sent our brown rice off the list for a few days of the week. We were not eating much brown rice all that often anyways but now it is almost zero. Cous cous and quinoa are our new best friends.

Pasta? Bye bye. One of the easiest and fastest meals to whip up in my kitchen is now served to only The Little Girl when she specifically requests for her favourites (mac 'n cheese, carbonara, pasta bake, Bolognese, pesto).

Potatoes? Airfried.

Sweet potatoes? Airfried.

Salads made a huge comeback to our diet. We eat all colours of the rainbow again. Very satisfying to regain clean taste buds. Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds tossed with some extra virgin olive oil or lemon juice and Manuka honey. No store bought dressing.

By now, you would have realised that we have become the accidental organic vegans. Protein sources from quinoa, lentils, beans, tofu, milk, nuts and cheese are so plentiful that we hardly miss meat, chicken, seafood. Watch Food, Inc. and you will see what I see too.

That was just food and drinks.

Exercise. Gosh! Try handling 2 kids under 5 without a helper. Lifting weights, 8+ kg and 15+kg every time, at Gymboree. No kidding. They do bestow the most appropriate name for that happy place.

Housework. Some naysayers claim that housework does not count. Come to my humble abode and witness yourself if it counts. Especially when one of the kids vomits. At midnight. Onto the bed, floor and wallpaper covered walls.

There, it took me 39 weeks and 3 days to my big, pregnant body growing another life within me, and 230 days to return to my old clothes with a  healthy baby in my arms. I feel like myself again. This weight loss has done my soul so much good.

I repeat: I feel like myself again, alhamdulillah!

Occasionally, we do dine out, or indulge with extended family members. This balances life out, and we do not feel the slightest deprivation. Consistency is key, so commitment to health is important.

How has your journey been? Do share!

Post Natal Hair Loss

Hair, hair, hair everywhere but on my head!

Just kidding, I still have some hair left under my headscarf. However, clogged bath drainer signs that a big cat lives here !

Enter Kao Magic Dry Mop and its refillable fibre insert. Like magic, I can pick up hair and dust in a jiffy. Note: This is not an advertorial. I am just a happy consumer. I started in 1998 for pet cat hair and just never quit since. Good for all dry surfaces, I love how it satiates my cleaning mojo!

As for the clogged bath drainer, long bamboo satay sticks and disposable gloves both are indispensable arsenal to have.

Looks like I have new hair growth and hairstyle to look forward to *staying positive*.

How do you deal with your post natal hair loss? Do you get it at all?

The Labour Story

I am finding it difficult failing at finding time to sit down and recount the labour and birth story so piecemeal entries of this wonderful story is ever going to get told...

Chances are you may stumbled upon this entry if you are looking for Dr. Seri Suniza Sufian or Dr. Anthony James Mansul reviews. Let me just say they are both AWESOME.

If you are here because you want to know if Prince Court Medical Centre is any good, let me attest that my own experience there has been EXCELLENT and, so far, continues to be.

So here is my attempt at recounting my second birthing experience...

18 June 2013
At dinner preparation time, my MIL did most of the work and cooked while II sat down with The Little Girl and her new Duplo set of "Jake and the Never Land Pirates".

Contractions came and went, interval not regular. Cramp. Like period cramp.

I do not recall what we had for dinner because my appetite was absent. My MIL felt the baby was coming soon as I was less helpful in the kitchen this time.

Told MIL The Wish: Not to share my bestie's birthday on 19 June.

Right?

Wrong!

6 Week Check Up

Dismayed to see my weak pelvic muscles doing Kegel exercises (yes, I saw it on the display screen during ultrasound scan). No bladder leaks so far, but, oh, so much work ahead! Now focus, and Kegel those muscles correctly.

My uterus has shrunk to its original size (about 10 cm), and man, was I emotional over how empty it looks without a growing fetus inside!

Next up: The wait for pap smear in the second half of the first menstruation cycle. Turns out that I do not have to wait that long as it returned at the end of Ramadhan. From nifas to menstruation, no break this time...

End of Confinement

44 days served!

Celebrated by buying nursing tops (yay!) and feeding Bean directly instead of pumping (double yay!)

Dry Heels

So we all know that during post-natal recovery period it is ideal to apply the bengkung and firming creams on our tums to tighten and firm the flab that comes with stripes of pahala.

Let's not forget the feet.

They really take a good beating with all that extra weight before delivery, and now have to shrink to its pre-pregnancy size (some women never see their pre-pregnancy feet size again).

What I have also learnt from my previous recovery after delivery is to observe the following diligently after bath:

Apply heel balm.

Apply moisturiser to feet.

Wear socks to lock in balm and moisturiser.

Results in smoother skin for feet - anti-aging no brainer, really.

Oh, and a fortnightly/monthly session of pedicure doesn't hurt either. It feels good to spend time treating myself to some much needed feet treatment and coming home as a better, recharged, gorgeous mum of two.

Hello again, smooth and pretty feet!

Post-Natal Weight Loss

At Week 39 gestation of my second pregnancy, my weight was more than 63.9 kg *GASP*

Post-natal weight loss record:

Day 3: 61.1 kg wearing size 18
(Bean was born 2.96 kg, and I also carried a lot of amniotic fluids. If you do the math, you will be as puzzled as I am as to how I only lost 2.8 kg - did I pile all the weight back on during the 2 nights we were at the hospital?)

Day 5: 59.8 kg wearing size 16
(Slightly more believable!)

Day 7: 59.6 kg
(I weigh myself first thing in the morning, so I must have lost water and not fat...)

Day 8: 59.1 kg wearing size 14
(I had the traditional massage at home, so I'd credit the weight loss to loss of water retention)

Day 11: 57.7 kg
(Same as above, although I met my belly button again. It has been a while, belly button! I have missed you)

Day 14: 56.4 kg wearing size 12
(Same as above. Sigh. Isn't the expressing and feeding working?)

Day 16: 56.1 kg
(Stagnant. Need a new vanity self-care programme)

Day 95: 54.5 kg wearing size 10
Must, must, must soldier on.

Keep in mind: It took me 39 weeks to balloon, so maybe it is only fair to give myself another 39 weeks to decompress to my previous size...

Target weight: 50 kg (I was 48 kg pre-pregnancy but suspect that was slightly featherweight)

Target size: Size 8 or 10 (Love the prospect of a wardrobe makeover although I would love to be wearing those size 8 clothing again *ego*)

Wish-list:
1. Non flabby abs.
2.Thighs with smaller circumference.

(That means I can have to start exercising again after the 6 week check up. I can live with the "stripes of pahala" a.k.a. stretchmark for another year. Give them time to fade...)

Cheer me on, will ya?

Second Pregnancy: Week 35

"Not time yet, Bean!"

"Stay in there!"

"It is not June just yet!"

Alhamdulillah, I am leaking colostrum. Treatment for my cracked, dry and chapped nipples, I use Lansinoh and Medela Purelan 100.

Alhamdulillah I am still having Braxton Hicks (but sometimes it is a wee bit painful and I actually time the intervals - just in case). My body reacts to stress. When The Other Half and The Little Girl get into one of their many battles of the wills, I end up with painful contractions! Totally not fair.

Alhamdulillah I am taking enough fibres and manage to keep constipation and piles at bay.

Alhamdulillah the hospital bag is packed into my preferred small size black trolley bag (no heavy lifting required). Note with missing items have been handed to The Other Half so he knows what to buy if I need them.

Alhamdulillah the hospital route has been worked out and practiced for different traffic conditions/time of day.

Alhamdulillah work is almost complete with just a few more documents to draft. I do most of my work at night after The Little Girl has gone to bed.

I still have not gotten pre-admission letter from my ob-gyn (obviously it is still too early). Our next appointment is at the end of Week 36 and I may request for one. If anything happens now, I will just have to head to ER without any letters. I hope a credit card security for payment will do.

Maybe I should line my bed tonight, just in case my water breaks.

23 May 2013: False Alarm Episode

After dinner at The Flat Upstairs, at about 9.30 p.m., I started noticing contractions that were lasting 3 minutes or more, and totalled more than 6 in one hour. Rang the hospital at 10.30 p.m. and informed them that there was no show/no water bag leak or break but my contractions were within that frequency. Hospital staff said to go to in for monitoring via CTG at the labour room just to be safe.

Rang The Grandparents (who had left The Flat Upstairs and went back to The House, 40 minutes away) at 10.40 p.m. They promptly did a U-turn and arrived at our place at 11.40 p.m. to watch over (then, a sleeping) Little Girl.

Grabbed the hospital bag (see above, alhamdulillah!), went to ER, got wheeled into the labour room, changed, passed urine, got the CTG strapped on and the nurses rang the ob-gyn up.

A vaginal exam was ordered. No dilation, which was a good thing as we are still "premature". My most uncomfortable vaginal exam ever, I confess. I now know that I am allergic to Hexidin Cream 1%. It was like a ring of fire, burning and painful.

The first "school prefect" type of nurse tried giving me a vaginal exam without first propping me into the right position. She just went ahead and asked me to adjust my position as she probed when I kept saying, "No, no, no. This is not nice!".

I told her to stop.

She went out to get a second nurse. Her exact words before leaving the room were, "I will get you another nurse, maybe her fingers are smaller."

I was like #%*@!

In came the second nurse. The sweet, smiley, gentle but firm person.

She spoke gently and adjusted my posture first. Politely, she requested, "Lie back and relax, please spread your thighs this way. Can we straighten your back? OK, let's breathe in, breathe out, good, let's keep breathing. There. No dilation, we are done."

It was over in less than 2 minutes.

The only irritation left was from the Hexidin Cream.

Before we left the labour ward, the nurses took my urine sample for tests, just in case of an infection. As for the Hexidin, we were advised to request for water based gel next time since we now know about my adverse reaction. The immediate treatment for the irritation is to rinse as much as possible off.

My ob-gyn also asked the nurses to inform me that I need more rest.

Needless to say, I am not allowed to handle any drama from The Little Girl whenever she insists on being carried in the haste of emotional meltdown or tantrums (she is a mere 13kg!) since then. Earlier that day, The Little Girl had a two hour meltdown (refusing to change her diapers, refusing to go on the potty, speeding on her indoor car, jumping up and down the sofa, running at top speed at home etc.) I had to carry her on my hips when "all hell broke loose" just to calm her down.

Oh what a long night it was.

I was discharged at 2 a.m. when the Braxton Hicks ceased. Amazingly, Bean was as cool as cucumber and stopped practising. Stealth mode on, I kind of looked like a complete idiot.

The bill came up to RM10.

Seriously.

Home we went, The Grandparents went to sleep at The Flat Upstairs. We went to bed. The Little Girl did not notice anything amiss. We showed her photographs taken at the labour ward the following morning before she went to school.

So.

Back to positive reinforcement.

"Not time yet, Bean!"

"Stay in there!"

"It is not June just yet!"

Question: Is your pregnancy this interesting/dramatic/memorable too? *hehe*

Second Pregnancy: Confinement Food Recipes

Stumbled upon "Falling in Love with Confinement" by Peiling Goh at Kinokuniya yesterday. Retails for RM46.00. See also www.moms2b.com

I got myself a copy and after flipping through a few pages, I am loving the recipes. Excited enough to share my thoughts here after trying out a few simple dishes (omitted those with black fungus and mushrooms so as not to trigger more contractions).

Note: Mine is a bilingual copy - very handy as The Other Half and I can then read the English version while my confinement helper can read the Mandarin version. Literally, we are on the same page, pun intended.

The healing food and drink recipes are so delicious looking I am looking forward to testing the safe ones now and wait for the rest during confinement. I like how it is a practical handbook, simple enough for The Other Half to follow on days when we are on our own.

Here's finally looking forward to confinement positively/not dread the lack of support network/avoiding limited food and drink choices/having to explain every single recipe that I have used before at every single meal preparation.

Caveat: I cross refer all ingredients with Halal & Haram, The Prohibited & The Permitted Foods & Drinks According to Jewish, Christian & Muslim Scriptures by Muhammad Umar Chand.

Syukur Alhamdulillah!

Light Urinary Leakage

I did not have LUL/bladder control problems during my first pregnancy. After the birth of The Little Girl, I had a slight reduction of control but that quickly resolved itself with Kegel.

Not all women have weak pelvic muscles. Bless those who don't. And please do not jeer at those who do. Everyone is built differently.

Luckily for me, my current ob-gyn is a specialist in this area as well. Dr. Seri Suniza Sufian referred me to a physiotherapist by the name of Neng at PCMC. Hydrotherapy was prescribed alongside the correct method for Kegel. Thanks to a quick troubleshoot and treatment with continued exercise at home, I have regained control over my bladders. Bye bye LUL for now.

Golden question: How to you manage pregnancy related LUL or incontinence?

From my personal experience:

1. A normal panty liner may be sufficient for the super light leaks. Hint: Poise.

2. A maxi pad may be called for if the volume of accidental leaks increase with the added pressure towards the second and third trimester. However, urine and menstrual discharge are not the same and as such, require different products. Hint: Poise.

3. An adult diaper may see you through a long sit down conference or seminar without any embarrassment, especially if you are also suffering from fits of coughs in your third trimester.

Which would you choose?

Do share.

Second Pregnancy: Week 26

I have been so sluggish with this update *blushing in shame* unlike during my first pregnancy when I was so free and diligent to update on a weekly basis.

Our last check up was on 21 March 2013.

Ooh, that is a long time ago and now my updates are not up to date *double blush in shame*...

Anyways, the Little Bean was quite quiet during the scan and evidently sucking on right arm when the scan was taken. Pretty much like how The Little Girl was as a newborn, peacefully sucking on a thumb or arm or fist to self soothe. Eventually after birth, the paediatrician is sure to recommend moving the thumb/arm/fist away to prevent sucking on germs and bacteria, sigh. We do not give pacifiers too for the same hygiene reasons which leave me as the human pacifier. Tsk tsk tsk!

Wishful thinking: If only there is magically no germs and bacteria on baby's thumb/arm/fist and The Little Bean can continue to self-soothe that way.

Estimated weight: 1 kg. Mummy's weight: 58.4 kg. Other measurements all look normal and at par for gestation age. That put me at ease somewhat knowing that The Little Bean has gained some weight and is growing well despite Mummy being down with bronchitis, alhamdulillah!

The flutters that progressed into kicks and punches have slowly changed into Mexican waves and softer but bigger movements, signifying a slightly bigger size of baby within me.

On a more interesting note, we went to one session of physiotherapy, and one session of hydrotherapy. The hydrotherapy session was really relaxing and I had Braxton-Hicks twice. Definitely will return once the dust settles at home (literally too!). Being in a heated pool calms and relaxes all my muscles. Next project involves shopping for a much more accommodating baby doll with shorts type of swimwear (and larger maternity wear), to accommodate my bigger build.

The leg cramps and pelvic cramps have all set in, with the occasional baby head down position resulting in added pressure on bladder/nerves. Every time I consume calcium with vitamin D tablets, I throw up. I have given up and just resort to consuming more nano-calcium laden yoghurt, milk, bananas and ultimately, some light stretching before sleeping.

My nipples cracked too, from all that rapid expansion but luckily, Lansinoh works well for me. The skin is so dry and thirsty it soaks up every drop of almond oil that I rub on in an instant. My pedicurist is pampering me with slightly more scrubs and heel balm too, bless her!

The fatigue? Let's just say I am so glad that most of the shopping for The Little Bean is complete. How else would I find enough time and energy to scout around for the right price and good deals? I took my own good advice/experience from first pregnancy, hah!

Perhaps I should pack my hospital bag, just so that I can tick it off my checklist of things to do.

Until the next check up in mid April, stay happy!

Measurements taken by Dr. Seri Suniza Sufian on 21.03.2013:

BPD: 6.54 cm (was 5.53 cm)

Head circumference: 24.01 cm (was 20 cm)

Abdominal circumference: 21.55 cm (was 16.94 cm)

Femur length: 4.89 cm (was 3.54 cm)

Estimated fetal weight: 906 g (was 444 g)

Second Pregnancy: Diaper Bag

The Skip Hop Onyx Tile is on my hunt list at the moment. I love how it is single strap, easy to loop over the Maclaren stroller, has 9 easy to use fairly roomy compartments, washable and reasonably priced.

When purchasing a diaper bag, I consider factors like dirt management/laundering after using it at public diaper change stations, nursing rooms that may not come with hooks, stroller friendliness when you need both arms, lightweight construction etc.

I guess I must learnt something useful since my last pregnancy.

With The Little Girl, we first used a Nike Gym bag (single strap, washable, lightweight, large compartments) but eventually outgrew it when the ranks of solid food, toys and books joined the "cargo".

Eventually, we upgraded to an actual diaper bag from Carter that was large enough to store the works (could have included the kitchen sink if we wanted to) but the larger the bag, the more I carried. That resulted in achy shoulders, for sure!

Now, I have seen the actual Skip Hop Onyx Tile bag and LOVED it, but me being me, I refused to purchase it there and then because the shop assistant was "not the least interested in selling anything that day".

However, I can just imagine going places with this design and oh, the places we could go with it! Fashionably at that!

A mother of two sure can dream, yes?

So...

Which is your favourite diaper bag?

Would you purchase anything from an unfriendly shop assistant?

Dry Skin

I cannot live without these 4 products at the moment:

1. Earth Mama Angel Baby - Natural Stretch Oil
Started using this product the minute I found out that I am pregnant this second time round. Somehow it doesn't reduce the dryness of my skin because occasionally I felt the "stretch itch".

I also suffered from some mild eczema in the first trimester so I had to constantly rub the oil in. Best to rub in after a shower. Put clothes on only after the oil has been absorbed. I still use this occasionally to finish whatever is left in the spray bottle.

2. L'Occitane - Firming and Smoothing Supple Skin Oil with Almond Oil
I could not tolerate the sweet smell during my first trimester. At week 16 when the nausea and vomiting eased, I purchased a bottle of this lovely, rich almond oil right away.

Oh, how I love this!

Absorbs quickly into skin right after shower, does not leave any sticky or oily residue. I have been spoiling myself silly, a very tiny form of indulgence twice daily.

3. L'Occitane - Cleansing and Softening Shower Oil with Almond Oil
A small amount goes a long way in lathering up a rich foam that leaves my skin squeaky clean but moisturised and soft. Works like wonder to ease up mild eczema for both The Little Girl and I.

4. Tanamera Cold Press Virgin Coconut Oil - Richer than almond oil for the final trimester all out stretch and perineum massage. Be sure to let all oil absorb into skin before putting clothes on.

What about you? Do share your dry skin combat tips!

Pedicure

One of my "big boo boo" during my first pregnancy was not to have pedicure and relied on The Other Half to cut my toe nails, rub moisturiser nightly etc. once I could not bend low enough to reach my toes.

As a result of that "neglect", I had some dry skin especially at my heels.

The Other Half is not very good with giving pedicure, so he keeps his day job *hehe*.

Now, we all agree that dry heels are not only unattractive, they can be painful, especially if they are cracked!

So, I got wiser.

In this second pregnancy, I am not taking chances. I am not waiting until I can bend no more/can see my toes no more to start taking care of my precious feet. Afterall, they carry precious cargo and a too-lazy-to-walk-I-want-to-carried-almost-3 y.o.!

I now go for my monthly pedicure/feet spa (wish I have more budget to accommodate fortnightly sessions - a girl sure can dream!), and slap on some Du'it Foot & Heel Balm Plus feet balm every night after shower before going to bed.

The results: Much nicer looking toesies and improved skin on heels! Yay!!

From Kate Middleton Style to Short Bob

If you are looking for an independent review dry shampoo during confinement period, go away now. I tried it and it is just not for me.

My hair is all glorious during pregnancy but once I deliver, my hair drops. Another common hormonal pregnancy experience, you'd say.

Some Asians believe that washing hair is taboo during confinement, but not I (see why I chased you away in the very first paragraph?)

I wash my hair daily, otherwise I feel greasy and not able to sleep well.

(I can imagine the disapproving look/daggers some confinement ladies shoot my way).

Confession: During confinement, I tend to wash my hair once daily, towel dry and quickly blow dry to have that clean scalp/better mood to care for newborn mood...

Which is why...

under my head scarf and hijab...

is my short bob!

Oh, I love how fast shampooing, conditioning, rinsing, towelling, blow drying and combing really is with a short bob.

More time to cuddle the newborn and handle The Little Girl, what's not to love about it? *big smile*

Great plus: Hair drop looks less scary when hair is short, easier to pick up with fibre dry mop, and hair stays away from baby's burp!

Not a secret that hair grows again, and I just adore the sense of adventure in anticipating a new hair-do when it all grows back!

Bigger Happy Feet

I am one of those women whose feet expand during pregnancy.

My pre-pregnancy shoe size is 6.5 and now at 21 weeks, I am donning size 8!

Before swelling.

Imagine if my feet start to swell in the few final weeks...

Oh well.

Until I return to my petite ballerina flats post-pregnancy, I guess I will have to "heart" my Scholls slip-on in white leather.

I had a red pair the last pregnancy and since this may be my final pregnancy, I thought I may just as well indulge in white shoes...

Second Pregnancy: Braxton-Hicks

Like clockwork.

The Little Girl first gave me Braxton-Hicks with pelvic cramps when she hit 20 weeks on the dot. Right before a mini family getaway to Penang. At ER in SJMC, a Doppler was placed. No show, go home and rest.

Last week, The Little Bean gave me Braxton-Hicks with pelvic cramps at 20 weeks on the dot too. Right before a mini weekend break to a local hotel adjacent to a popular but ever jam packed shopping mall. At ER in PCMC, a Doppler was placed. No show, go home and rest.

Coincidence, much?

*breathe in deeply, three short puffs out*

Pregnancy Distractions

I find ways to distract myself when going through an especially tough bout of nausea and vomiting, when I happen to be home. One of the ways to easily distract myself is to watch TV for an hour or so when I am not busy with The Little Girl.

During my first pregnancy, I watched and enjoyed re-watching series and programmes like The Sopranos, Prison Break, Life, Castle and Hayao Miyazaki animated movies. Well, The Little Girl turns out to be quite impatient, hot tempered, sometimes an escape artist and cute all within her special personality.

So people (including my ob-gyn) tell me not to compare pregnancies as each one is different...how true, save for the nausea and vomiting part in my case!

This second time round, I seem to have been hit by the K-Drama fever in terms of distraction entertainment choice. I have enjoyed and still enjoy drama series such as Seoyeong, My Daughter, Ohlala Couple, Love My Love TV Novella and Big. Now I pray The Little Bean will not be melodramatic and tearful but sweet, polite and beautiful as some of the characters on screen.

How do you distract/entertain yourself during pregnancy? Do share!
